Senior Consultant – Surgical Gastroenterology, Liver Transplant & HPB Onco Surgery
Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals, Kolkata | MBBS · MS · MRCS (Edinburgh) · Dip Lap Surg (France) · Fellowship Liver Transplant & HPB
Dr. Sumit Gulati is one of Eastern India's most distinguished Surgical Gastroenterologists and Liver Transplant Surgeons, with over 24 years of surgical experience. He holds MBBS, MS (General Surgery), MRCS from Edinburgh (UK), Diploma in Laparoscopic Surgery from Strasbourg (France), and a Fellowship in Liver Transplantation and HPB (Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary) Onco Surgery from Apollo Hospital, New Delhi — making him one of the most internationally qualified surgeons in the region.
He completed advanced clinical training at Chesterfield Royal Hospital and Hull Royal Infirmary, England — gaining hands-on expertise in complex GI, HPB, and laparoscopic surgery under world-class British surgical mentors. Back in India, he has pioneered liver transplantation services at Apollo Kolkata, building one of Eastern India's most respected HPB and GI surgical teams.
Dr. Gulati specialises in the most complex procedures in surgery — including Liver Transplantation, Whipple's Surgery (Pancreaticoduodenectomy), Major Hepatectomy, Cholecystectomy, and the full range of Minimally Invasive / Laparoscopic GI surgeries. He is a published researcher and has presented at national conferences including the IHPBA Annual Conference (Jaipur, 2019) and the 11th International Congress of AMASI (2016). He is now visiting Apollo Info Centre, Agartala — bringing world-class surgical consultation directly to patients in Tripura.
HPB surgery covers the most complex operations in general surgery — involving the Liver, Pancreas, and Bile Ducts. Dr. Gulati is among a handful of surgeons in Eastern India trained to perform these at the highest level. Procedures include Liver Transplantation (living and cadaveric donor), Major Hepatectomy (partial liver removal for cancer), Pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple's Surgery) for pancreatic cancer, complex bile duct repairs, and Laparoscopic HPB Surgery. His international training at Edinburgh (MRCS), Strasbourg (Laparoscopy), Apollo Delhi (Liver Transplant), and two UK hospitals gives him a global perspective rarely found in regional India.
Dr. Gulati communicates fluently in Bengali, Hindi, and English — making him highly accessible to patients from Tripura, West Bengal, and Northeast India.
